WHAT'S IN A NAME?

I DON'T WANT TO SHOCK ANYONE, BUT MEN AND WOMEN IN THEIR 60'S AND 70'S ARE PAIRING UP FASTER THAN SECOND COUSINS AT A FAMILY REUNION IN ARKANSAS. FRIENDS OF MINE HAVE BECOME A "NEW" COUPLE. SHE'S 78 AND HER ADORABLE TADPOLE IS 70. THEY COULDN'T BE HAPPIER OR CUTER. RECENTLY, THEY DECIDED TO POOL THEIR RESOURCES AND SHARE HER HOME. WHEN SHE REQUESTED A REMOTE GATE OPENER SO THAT HE COULD COME AND GO AT THE CLUB WHERE THEY LIVE, SHE WAS ASKED TO DEFINE THEIR RELATIONSHIP, PURSUANT TO CLUB RULES. FOR LACK OF ANY ALTERNATIVE, IT WAS DECIDED THAT HE WILL BE KNOWN AS HER "SPOUSAL EQUIVALENT". IN OTHER WORDS, CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR. HEARING WHITE HAIRED PEOPLE REFER TO EACH OTHER AS "BOYFRIEND" AND "GIRLFRIEND" DOESN'T FIT SOMEHOW. THERE MIGHT BE SOME REFUGE IN THE TERM "FIANCE". IT CREATES AN EXPECTATION FOR MARRIAGE, WHETHER OR NOT THERE IS ONE. IS THIS FINALLY A TIME IN A WOMAN'S LIFE WHEN MARRIAGE IS NOT THE ULTIMATE CULMINATION OF A LOVING RELATIONSHIP? A TIME, PERHAPS, WHEN SHARING LIFE WITH A FELLOW TRAVELER IS IT'S OWN REWARD. YOU DON'T NEED A MARRIAGE LICENSE FOR A GATE OPENER TO PARADISE.
